On Thursday evening, June 27th, a tragic incident occurred off the coast of Ajuy in Fuerteventura.

At 20:26, the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (1-1-2) of the Canary Islands Government received an urgent alert reporting that several people had fallen into the sea.

In response to the alert, the 1-1-2 center swiftly mobilized the necessary emergency resources. Among the individuals affected, three managed to swim back to safety. The fourth person, a woman, was rescued from the water by the Fuerteventura Emergency Group and a private vessel.

Once onshore, the Canary Islands Emergency Services (SUC) personnel confirmed the woman’s death. The other three individuals, aged between 18 and 26, were attended to by medical staff. Fortunately, they did not require hospitalization.

The police units, activated by the Coordination Center, cooperated with other emergency resources and conducted the necessary procedures and investigations.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea especially on the west coast of Fuerteventura, characterized by strong currents that lead to dangerous conditions for swimming.
