The Government of the Canary Islands has activated the Civil Protection Territorial Emergency Plan (Plateca) in Lanzarote on Monday tonight, declaring an alert situation due to the fire at the Zonzamas environmental complex. All available firefighting resources on the island have been mobilized.

This decision, based on Civil Protection criteria, addresses the fire's severity, aiming to monitor the incident and deploy necessary resources, according to a statement from the community's General Directorate of Emergencies.

The fire in the Zonzamas Environmental Complex has generated a huge column of smoke that extends to Playa Honda and part of the airport.

Currently, all operational resources from the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium, along with various Civil Protection and emergency services from multiple municipalities and the Island Council, are engaged in the effort.

Additionally, the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter from the Canary Islands Government has been pre-alerted and will join the operation on Tuesday morning.

The island corporation, through its Island Emergency Plan, is currently managing the emergency.

Consequently, all possible firefighting means have been deployed, and citizens are advised to stay away from the landfill area for safety reasons.

The fire, reported to 112 after 7:00 p.m. on Monday, started in a section of pruning waste and spread to other parts of the complex, producing a significant column of smoke, according to the General Directorate of Emergencies.
